Description

Not being a photographer, I'm continually unsure if anything I take is a *good* photograph... critiques welcome:

A shot from Kiakoura Beach, East Coast, South Island New Zealand, looking back over the township and mountains. Those lil lights you see are street lamps, absolutely dwarfed in scale...

Took about 20 photos, this, by far and away my favourite.
And for all of those commenting in the "bad artists should be banned" thread. YES, this is a holiday shot...

Like Geno says, it looks like a huge fire! Great colors, the range of yellows to red is very nice, and the contrst with the black, dark moutain is great! If you have more like this pls, post them! ;)

No need to put yourself down; this is a very cool shot. I love the color and texture in the clouds, and the way they're framed by dark above and below. The dots of light in the lower third of the image add a nice abstract element.

Phenomonal color and excellent compositional balance with the small lights at the bottom holding down the foreground. they allow for an even more expansive feel to the sunset above. beautiful!

Cheers all!
Anubis - no more good shots like this unfortunately, many really colourful ones (honestly - such a brilliant sunset) - but I liked the crisp simplicity of this shot.
Marcia - heh, not putting myself down. I just object to the bad-artists-should-be-banned mentality that a lot of people here are throwing around. I think the worst thing that could happen to this site is for people to be afraid of posting cos they might get flamed ;)

I love sunset shots and this is a great one. I particularly like the small dots of light... I've never seen that before. It definately adds to it. Great shot.

excellent colors
its very cool how most is dark but there are areas of very bright colors
not much else to say its great...
one thing though: in the bottom left you can see some things that are hard to notice with a quick glance but itd be alot better if you were to edit them out or if you prefer not to edit its still a great shot

Nothing wrong with holiday shots—I actually thought those were airport runway lights until I read the description :) . Gorgeous mood and colors. I think cropping some of the black space from the top would even out the composition.

Cheers everyone!
Omengeorge - you're so right! But alas, you never know which shot is going to come out great, and with limited camera space on the 3rd day of a 2 week journey it pays to be conservative. I have an even better one taken from Nelson (at the end of my travels), but unfortunately with little/no room left on the camera size / quality prevents it being used (shocker).
VillageIdiot - The Aboriginal people are from Australia, which despite being close, has no relation at all to New Zealand.

bigrod- this piece is brilliant. your gut was telling you to take this shot and you did. if those lights at the bottom were not there this picture may not have worked (amazing how that works out sometimes) the lights solidify this picture and continuosly bring your eye back to the "fire behind the mountain"-as i will now call it. ;) muy bueno. :)

Awesome! I would've cropped the lower lights away, though... or, wait never mind. It's good as it is!
